Size can be deceiving. A large frame and strong body can be intimidating, while a smaller player can be overlooked. Such is the case with Leroy High School's junior Phillip Ervin. His frame may not be intimidating, but after you see his ability he is. There is likely no more versatile a player in the state. He pitches, catches, plays shortstop and center field for the Bears. He also is a wide receiver for Coach Danny
Powell's three time 2A state champions in football and baseball. Coach Powell not only has proved his success on the grind iron, but also the diamond with double duty. Players like Ervin have helped a lot. Another factor is that while Leroy is a 2A Alabama school Powell is not afraid to play up. 6A Citronelle High fell to the Bears 10-5 this past weekend as proof.
Ervin is a speedy 5'10"/160lb. package of dynamite. He has explosive, fast twitch actions that translate well at the plate and also in the field. He runs a 6.7 sixty, 86mph fastball and has nice bat speed at the plate. He can hit for average with gap power and can be a home run threat to his pull-side (right). He also has the intangibles - grit, instinct, leadership, ect. He is a throwback style player that you don't often see in our day. Phillip Ervin is fun to watch play.
Ervin quickly hit the recruiting charts last summer while playing for the Bama Bombers summer program and has several Division 1 colleges on his trail. He will rejoin the Bombers this coming summer with Leroy High teammates Clift Covington and Jarrette Davis. The Bears will also send sophomore Ajay Snow to the Bombers Junior team. They are a talented group of players and ones to follow closely the two next years.
