You can't overlook his size at 6-2/200lbs., but some may fail to check out this sleeper out of Niceville High School. It could be a hugh mistake for them, because AJ Gomez is a player with "now skills". The junior catcher splits time behind the plate with Mike Wells and with the short Florida high school season you might miss his start behind the plate. When Wells catches Gomez will DH and likewise when Gomez is behind the dish Wells will catch. The two compliment each other well. Make no mistake about it they are two of the best 2010 backstops in the southeast. Gomez three recent "caught stealings" again area foe Tate High school were impressive. What is more impresive was the fact that he doesn't possess the cannon many look for at this point, but cat quickness and pinpoint accuracy in his throws. All three were on the bag in plenty of time to catch Tate's base stealing threats.
Gomez also flashes power at the plate with a fast bat. He normally hits in the four hole for Coach Brad Phillips' Eagles. He has the prototypical attributes most colleges look for in a catcher - he hits for power, recieves well, has a nice pop time and has a durable body capable of enduring a lengthy schedule.
Another impressive factor in Gomez is that he is one of the top students at Niceville High. He maintains a 4.0+ in advanced classes. His academics and athleticism has already caught the attention of a few Ivy League schools and there are more to follow.
