AL - B.E.S.T. Troy Showcase Tournament at Troy University

June 15-20, 2009

Troy, Alabama

This past week Baseballclearinghouse.net's coverage of the 16U Troy Showcase and the 18U Troy Showcases at Troy University uncovered several promising prospects. Seventeen teams came through the event this past week, nine in the 16U event and eight in the 18U event with players from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. While many showed to be prospects a few stood out and caught our eyes.

 

Blake Bearden (C) - 2010 Hewitt Trussville High R/R

Blake is a big strong young man with a pro type frame at 6-4/210. His defensive skills were solid with a 1.95 pop time and flashed a strong arm with on-line accurate throws. He was equally impressive at the plate and stayed on base the entire weekend largely with gap doubles to both gaps. He centers the ball well and shows nice bat speed. What caught our attention most was his ability to hit deep in the count effectively and his ability to gain the additional base with aggressiveness and good reads. He is a very nice prospect with a high ceiling. He plays on the Bama Bombers Senior Team.

 

Chase Davis (RHP/IF) - 2010 Alabama Christian Academy R/R

Chase is a talented infielder with a strong body. He is more likely suited best as a college 3B. He hits the ball well and has nice defensive skills with arm strength. He has nice athleticism and shows some range. On the mound his fastball sits 86-88 mph, but we see more there. His off speed pitches as above average and he locates well. His arm was sore during the tournament and he played with some pain, but we see nice skills present. He plays for the Montgomery Force.

 

Chase Handy (OF/LHP) - 2010 Hokes Bluff High L/L

Chase is a nice athlete we see best as a corner outfielder. He strongest tool is his bat. He centers balls well and will hit for average. He controls the bat well and shows HR power to his pull side (left). In the field he shows adequate range for a corner outfielder and some arm strength. On the mound he pitches with a rigid arm, but shows ability to pitch. His off speed is above average and his FB sits in the low to mid 80's with some life. He plays for the Montgomery Force.

 

Hunter Kelley (IF) - 2010 Alexandria High R/R

Hunter is a nice athletic infielder with raw skills. He is a multi-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He flashes smooth actions with above average speed with range and the arm strength to handle shortstop at the college level. At the plate he handles the bat well with some gap to gap pop. He needs some refinement in his skills, but the skills are very present. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

Ben Moore (OF/C) - 2011 Cullman High R/R

Ben is an athletic outfielder/catcher with advanced skills. He runs well and has nice quickness behind the dish and in the outfield. He blocks well and has arm strength (90 mph from outfield) and sub 2.00 pop times. In the outfield he has range, takes good angles and makes good reads. Maybe his best tool is his bat. He hits with a lot of pop in his bat and is a gap to gap power with HR strength to pull side. He centers the ball and creates backspin. His approach is quick and straight to the ball. He is a well advanced hitter that can hit deep in the count. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

Phillip Ervin (OF/RHP) - 2010 Leroy High R/R

Phillip is a very fast, athletic player with a small body. He flashes fast twitch actions with nice arm strength. In the outfield he can cover ground, but needs some help on his first step and reads. His angles are good and he plays with aggressiveness. At the plate he has explosive bat speed with a lot of power for a small frame. He is a HR threat to pull side (right), but is more suited to the early lineup as a lead-off or two hole hitter. On the mound his FB sits 85-86 mph, but will bump up to 88 occasionally. His change is a nice out pitch for him, but his CB can become lose at times. He has a bulldog mound presence and competes well. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

Jarrette Davis (LHP/OF) - 2010 Leroy High L/L

Jarrette is a true coach's project that could pay hugh dividends. He is raw with some mechanical issues that once fixed could make him a top prospect. He has raw arm strength and a strong frame. He is athletic and has the ability to correct mechanics. He shows a competitive nature on the mound and a good presence. His FB sits 82-83 mph, but has 88+ in it. He doesn't repeat his delivery well and has innings where he struggles with his control, but he has an idea of what he is doing on the hill. At the present time he is a ground ball out style pitcher who could translate into a strikeout type with help. His CB has a lot of depth due to an over-the-top arm slot and is a good out pitch for him. Jarrette plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

 

Ryan Joy (OF) - 2010 Hartselle High L/L

Ryan is a promising corner outfielder with a good power bat. He hits with a lot of power to his pull side (left). He has a quick approach and fast bat, but some lower half restriction. Once this is fixed he will become a national hitting prospect. In the outfield he has adequate speed for a corner position and enough arm strength to play right field. He needs help making better reads off the bat, but his angles are okay and his glove is soft. He has the bat and size at 6-3/195 to possibly make a move to first base at the college level. Ryan plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

 

Jacob Croft (RHP) - 2011 Sylvania High R/R

Jacob has been in our reports before, but bears mentioning again due to a strong showing at the 16U Troy event. After struggling early in relief he cam in to pitch a no hitter against a strong Wiregrass Cardinals team. His FB's velocity was down some, but he pitched well and found a way to compete without it. He located his FB well and used two breaking pitches for out pitches. Equally impressive was the complete seven inning game on a low, limited pitch count. His FB was 82-86 mph during the afternoon and bumped up to 88 on a couple of occasions. His CB's sat between 68-73 mph and were very effective during the afternoon. Word came to us yesterday that he had 12 K's in his first game at the prestigious USA Baseball 16U World Championship East as he led his team to a 10-0 victory over Team Colorado. Jacob plays for the Bama Bombers Junior team.
