National Tournament of Stars report 1

Hundreds of major league scouts and college coaches roasted in the 95' degree North Carolina sun to evaluate some of the best high school talent in the nation in one of the premier scouting events of the summer.  144 players competed broken down by class: 17- 2009's, 113-2010's, and 14-2011's.  As the picture below shows, shade was the premium with many more scouts and coaches (not pictured) taking cover under the overhang on each side of the Brooks Stadium seating bowl. 

Below are spotlighted players in no particular order, these are NOT rankings.

10 players per day will be posted over the next several days.  Check back often!

Kyle VanAlstine  (5) Dixie National Team showed 85-86mph fb velo with 68mhp cb velocity from a lean athletic frame.  VanAlstine is a 6'4 175, 2010 RHP from Merrit Island HS in  Merrit Island FL.

 

Travis Harrison (8) Babe Ruth Team showed big time speed and bat speed.  Tyler is a 2011 from Tustin HS in Aliso Viejo, CA who posted 6.84 sixty time and showed advanced college level hand strength and bat speed from the right hand side of the batters box.  Top level National level talent in the 2011 class.

 

Clayton Crum (14) NABF Team showed big arm strength flashed 86-90mph fb velo and a nice tight 76-78mph slider.  Clayton is a 6'1 190 RHP from Klein HS in Houston Texas.  Look for more velocity to come.  Athletic actions from a strong frame.

 

 

Reggie Golden (14) RBI Team patrolled the outfield showing off 6.75 sixty speed and very good arm strength.  Reggie is a 5'10 210 2010 OF from Wetumka HS in Wetumpka AL.  In the box Reggie shows very good bat speed with college level strength and power.  Tools that should get pro interest next spring.

Trevor Williams (15) Pony Team showed good mound prescence and good velo.  On a very hot day, Trevor's command was off a little.  Trevor is a 2011 RHP from Rancho Bernardo HS in San Diego, CA.  With a 6'3 205 frame and polished mechanics, look for continued increase in velocity.   

Patrick Harrington (6) Pony Team catcher 5'9-180 R/R from Kellam HS in Virginia Beach, VA who showed off a hot bat with multi hit games dispite catching 7 innings in Wednesdays game and 9 innings on Thursday in oppresive heat.  We have seen Patrick in the 1.85-190 pop time range recently.  Overlooked is 7.01 sixty speed and the ability to play in  the outfield.  Definite two way player with offense.  Top level prospect for college and definite pro interest. Gamer!

AJ (Andrew) Cole (11) Dixie Team showed why he will garner heavy pro interest over the next year with a 89-92mph fb with solid life and spotty sink and a nice 78mph cb.  With a profile frame at 6'5-190lbs, AJ is a 2010 from Oviedo HS in Winter Springs, FL.  Loose and easy with down angle fb and higher velocity projection coming from a clean delivery and a arm that works well , no doubt ,strong pro prospect. 

 

 

Daniel Camerena (3) USA Stars Team will have the "two way" label attached.  On the mound the 6'0-195lb LHP showed 83-86fb velocity with good life, 66cb velocity with depth and solid command.  Daniel is a 2011 player from Cathedral Catholic HS in Bonita, CA with a big bat.  Daniel put on a show in early bp session with excellent college level power and the ability to use the field.  Fast twitch player with 7.18 sixty speed, which should continue to drop.  Big hits in the games with ability to run the bases.  Top level national prospect in the 2011 class.

Bryce Harper (16) American Legion Team has been profiled recently in national magazines and media outlets and there was anticipation on seeing Bryce at the event.  A 6'3-206 , 2011 C/IF from Las Vegas Nevada.  The most experts feel he is the most advanced player in the 2011 class and perhaps the 2010 class also.  Bryce posted two sixty time at 7.44 on his first trip and 7.04 on his second attempt.  Bryce showed top of the charts hitting ability and power, on a pro scale, in bp and shot a ball 103mph exit velocity off the bat during a game at bat.  Big time arm strength behind the plate and in the outfield.  Latest scuttle butt has Bryce entering a Comm College in Nevada in the fall the complete GED requirements and plans to be eligible for the 2010 Major League free agent draft.

Stefan Sabol (19) Babe Ruth Team is athletic and posted a very quick 6.72 sixty time, which is very good for any player, but is almost never seen by primary catcher,  Stefan also showed very good hand strength and bat speed at the plate.  Stefan is a 6'2-203lbs C/OF in the 2010 class from Aliso Niguel HS in Aliso Viejo, CA.  Strong catchers frame with more power to come.  Did well with wood bat and showed of good arm strength behind the dish.

AL - B.E.S.T. Troy Showcase Tournament at Troy University

This past week Baseballclearinghouse.net's coverage of the 16U Troy Showcase and the 18U Troy Showcases at Troy University uncovered several promising prospects. Seventeen teams came through the event this past week, nine in the 16U event and eight in the 18U event with players from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. While many showed to be prospects a few stood out and caught our eyes.

 

Blake Bearden (C) - 2010 Hewitt Trussville High R/R

Blake is a big strong young man with a pro type frame at 6-4/210. His defensive skills were solid with a 1.95 pop time and flashed a strong arm with on-line accurate throws. He was equally impressive at the plate and stayed on base the entire weekend largely with gap doubles to both gaps. He centers the ball well and shows nice bat speed. What caught our attention most was his ability to hit deep in the count effectively and his ability to gain the additional base with aggressiveness and good reads. He is a very nice prospect with a high ceiling. He plays on the Bama Bombers Senior Team.

 

Chase Davis (RHP/IF) - 2010 Alabama Christian Academy R/R

Chase is a talented infielder with a strong body. He is more likely suited best as a college 3B. He hits the ball well and has nice defensive skills with arm strength. He has nice athleticism and shows some range. On the mound his fastball sits 86-88 mph, but we see more there. His off speed pitches as above average and he locates well. His arm was sore during the tournament and he played with some pain, but we see nice skills present. He plays for the Montgomery Force.

 

Chase Handy (OF/LHP) - 2010 Hokes Bluff High L/L

Chase is a nice athlete we see best as a corner outfielder. He strongest tool is his bat. He centers balls well and will hit for average. He controls the bat well and shows HR power to his pull side (left). In the field he shows adequate range for a corner outfielder and some arm strength. On the mound he pitches with a rigid arm, but shows ability to pitch. His off speed is above average and his FB sits in the low to mid 80's with some life. He plays for the Montgomery Force.

 

Hunter Kelley (IF) - 2010 Alexandria High R/R

Hunter is a nice athletic infielder with raw skills. He is a multi-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He flashes smooth actions with above average speed with range and the arm strength to handle shortstop at the college level. At the plate he handles the bat well with some gap to gap pop. He needs some refinement in his skills, but the skills are very present. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

Ben Moore (OF/C) - 2011 Cullman High R/R

Ben is an athletic outfielder/catcher with advanced skills. He runs well and has nice quickness behind the dish and in the outfield. He blocks well and has arm strength (90 mph from outfield) and sub 2.00 pop times. In the outfield he has range, takes good angles and makes good reads. Maybe his best tool is his bat. He hits with a lot of pop in his bat and is a gap to gap power with HR strength to pull side. He centers the ball and creates backspin. His approach is quick and straight to the ball. He is a well advanced hitter that can hit deep in the count. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

Phillip Ervin (OF/RHP) - 2010 Leroy High R/R

Phillip is a very fast, athletic player with a small body. He flashes fast twitch actions with nice arm strength. In the outfield he can cover ground, but needs some help on his first step and reads. His angles are good and he plays with aggressiveness. At the plate he has explosive bat speed with a lot of power for a small frame. He is a HR threat to pull side (right), but is more suited to the early lineup as a lead-off or two hole hitter. On the mound his FB sits 85-86 mph, but will bump up to 88 occasionally. His change is a nice out pitch for him, but his CB can become lose at times. He has a bulldog mound presence and competes well. He plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

Jarrette Davis (LHP/OF) - 2010 Leroy High L/L

Jarrette is a true coach's project that could pay hugh dividends. He is raw with some mechanical issues that once fixed could make him a top prospect. He has raw arm strength and a strong frame. He is athletic and has the ability to correct mechanics. He shows a competitive nature on the mound and a good presence. His FB sits 82-83 mph, but has 88+ in it. He doesn't repeat his delivery well and has innings where he struggles with his control, but he has an idea of what he is doing on the hill. At the present time he is a ground ball out style pitcher who could translate into a strikeout type with help. His CB has a lot of depth due to an over-the-top arm slot and is a good out pitch for him. Jarrette plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

 

Ryan Joy (OF) - 2010 Hartselle High L/L

Ryan is a promising corner outfielder with a good power bat. He hits with a lot of power to his pull side (left). He has a quick approach and fast bat, but some lower half restriction. Once this is fixed he will become a national hitting prospect. In the outfield he has adequate speed for a corner position and enough arm strength to play right field. He needs help making better reads off the bat, but his angles are okay and his glove is soft. He has the bat and size at 6-3/195 to possibly make a move to first base at the college level. Ryan plays for the Bama Bombers Senior team.

 

 

Jacob Croft (RHP) - 2011 Sylvania High R/R

Jacob has been in our reports before, but bears mentioning again due to a strong showing at the 16U Troy event. After struggling early in relief he cam in to pitch a no hitter against a strong Wiregrass Cardinals team. His FB's velocity was down some, but he pitched well and found a way to compete without it. He located his FB well and used two breaking pitches for out pitches. Equally impressive was the complete seven inning game on a low, limited pitch count. His FB was 82-86 mph during the afternoon and bumped up to 88 on a couple of occasions. His CB's sat between 68-73 mph and were very effective during the afternoon. Word came to us yesterday that he had 12 K's in his first game at the prestigious USA Baseball 16U World Championship East as he led his team to a 10-0 victory over Team Colorado. Jacob plays for the Bama Bombers Junior team.

Drew Cisco (22) Daimond Devils 18's showed off his power arm taking the mound vs the Orlando Scorpions at the Foley Stadium on Saturday morning.  Drew showed a 86-91mph fb velocity with very easy arm action, 71-74mph cb with above ave life and commad, and a developing 76mph change up.  Profile frame with more strength to come, Drew is a 2010 player form Waando HS in SC.  The picture to the left is only a prelude, Drew has verbally committed to Univ. of Georgia, by all accounts the Foley mound agrres with him.  Obvious pro interest might figure in on that decision next June.

Jeff Dally (7) Orlando Scorpions 17 Black LHP used his 6'5 frame to genterate 82-86mph fb with some cutting action, 74-76mph cb with spin that could have been tighter, and 73mph change up.  Learning to use height and will get more out of frame down the road.  Easy 3/4 extended arm slot with very easy arm action.  A 2010 from Citrus HS in Hernado FL.  6'5, loose lefty already in mid 80's....enough said.

Brandon Beans (6) Diamond Devils 18u drove the ball hard at Foley Stadium on Saturday.  Brandon drilled a home over the fence in the leftfield gap that still may be flying, Very athletic in the outfield with a frame that shows very good tone, present, with great strength projection.  Range plus arm strength, 2010 from Hartsville HS in Hartsville SC.  Status-Uncommitted

Brandon Bixler (15) Orlando Scorpions 17u Black took the Foley field mound against a very good hitting Diamond Devils team and showed 82-87mph fb  with ave life, a 70-72mph cb with very good bite at the end, and a excellent feel for his 73-74mph change up.  Medium athletic frame with good command for the 2010 from Hagerty HS in Oviedo, FL.  Finesse LHP with upside velo projection.  Confident mound presecene.

Ben Bullard (29) East Cobb Titans showed big fb with 88-90mph velocity with solid life, a slider at 79 might be his best pitch with sharp late life.  Big frame with plus mound prescence.  Uses extended 3/4 arm slot with excellent arm speed.  Ben is a 2009 committed to Univ. of Alabama-Birmingham from  Austin HS in Alabama.  You will hear more from Ben in June down the road.

Ricky Guzman (21) East Cobb Titans catcher  from Oxford HS in Alabama.  A 2009 committed to Calhoun CC with very strong bat.  Good oppo with excellent power projection in college.  Soft hands and frames well behind the plate.

Raphael Sanchez (7) Mid Atlantic Pirates second baseman showed solid glove in several games with very good instincts on the base paths.  A RH hitter with good bat speed and college level power.  Two player who can go behind the plate.  A 2010 from Robert E. Lee HS in Springfield, VA who projects very well as college second baseman.

Evan Marzilli (28) Diamond Devils 17u, looked very confortable in the Foley Stadium outfield and he will get more chances as he has signed with SEC rival University of South Carolina.  Evan has big time range and covers the compass e/w/n/s in centerfield.  At the plate Evan has advanced tools with June projection down the road.  A 2009 player from Bishop Hendrickson in Rhode Island.

Tyler Reed () Mid Atlantic Pirates had a big day with several hits in the first game of the day for the Pirates and closed out the day with two innings on the mound.  A 2010 OF/RHP from Matoaca HS in Chesterfield VA.  Reed showed very good arm strength on a throw to the plate from rightfield.  On the mound Tyler showed 83mph fb with really good action on his cb.

Evan Hilton (26) East Cobb Astros 17's had the start against the Orlando Scorpions in Thursday and showed good command of a 83-84mph fb that he painted with all day, 69-70mph cb with tight spin and very good depth, and 72-74mph change up with very good arm speed deception.  Evan is a 2010 from Woodland HS in Cartersville, GA.  

 

James Harris (12) East Cobb Astros 17's SS with big arm strength.  LH hitter with strongs and above ave college bat speed.  Big power from the left side of the box.  Athletic frame with good range at SS. James is 2010 from Etowah HS in Woodstock, GA.  Great tools.

 

Patrick Leonard (23) Orlando Scorpions 17u Black lit it up at the plate with a HR on Thursday and showed college level tools at SS with very good arm strength.  Very good range at SS with excellent range.  Patrick is a 2011 from Creekside HS in Jacksonville FL.  Big upside.

Adam Martin (13) East Cobb Astros 17's catcher with outstanding upside.  Size and strength with pro level projection on power and outstanding arm strength.  Blocks well with soft hands and polished framer.  Adam is a 2010 from Harrison HS in Marietta, GA.  Total package catcher who can catch/throw and hit.  Big upside.

Andrew Chin (47) East Cobb Astros 16's  RHP with profile frame and big time leverage.  88mph fb velo with very good command and 74cb velocity with good spin.  Big velo projection from a smooth clean delivery.  2010 at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols School.

Aaron Shipman (16) 5-Tool Nationals OF/LHP has two skills.  Strong hands and college bat speed from the left handed side of the box.  Line drive swing plane with leverage, look for Aaron to wear out the gaps.  Very athletic frame 2010 (6'2-175) from Brooks County HS in GA.  Did not see on the mound but arm showed very well in RF.  Should garner pro interest.

 

Drew Adams (33) Team Elite -3B showed big oppo power with a HR shot at Clark Central HS.  Drew has very good arm strength and showed it off on several plays at 3b.  Strong frame 6'1 195, 2010 player from East Hall HS in Georgia.

 

 

Ricky Knapp, (14) RHP Orlando Scorpions.  Lean athletic frame with poilished delivery.  88mph fb velocity with good command and some run, 73-75 slider with developing look to it,  Cb shows at two speeds and 68-75.  Both shapes look good and project as a big out pitch.  Some effort in delivery, adds a little decepiton.  Big velo upside.

Casey Mulholland (21) RHP Orlando Scorpions showed big time arm strength with 88-93mph fb with solid sink, 71-73cb velocity, slider could be best pitch with very good bite at 79-81mph velocity.  Profile with frame that should continue to add velo.  Polished delivery from a  3/4 slot .  Advanced tools and definite pro projection.

Patrick Merkling (7) LHP East Cobb Braves 17's showed very good command and velocity on his 88-90mph fb in relief at Foley Stadium on campus of UGA.  Spotted tight cb with 74mph velo.  Polished delivery with ext 3/4 slot .  2009 grad from Etowah HS, he is headed to Auburn in the fall.

 

Stetson Allie (21) East Cobb Braves 17's showed two way tools by DH'ing on Friday.  Drawing a couple of walks follows up a outing on the mound Thursday that saw Stetson show off the biggest arm strength in the country with 94-98mph fb.  A 2010 from St. Edward HS in Ohio, Stetson has already verbaled to University of North Carolina.

Brandon Roberts (3) East Cobb Braves 17's showed power and speed.  Speed in the outfield and on the base paths and power by driving a 3 run home run off the scoreboard at Foley Stadium on Friday.  Brandon is a 2009 from Oxford HS in Oxford, AL.  Brandon has committed to Shelton State.

Peter Culver () Mid Atlantic Pirates had a big day with two (2) run doubles in two games on Friday. The 2010 RH hitter from Louisa County HS in Louisa VA showed solid glove work at second base and third base.  Solid defense and good speed down the line.

Trevor Gott- RHP-Kentucky Baseball Club

Trevor is a RH pitcher with big time arm strength showing 89-94mph fb. Trevor is a 2010 from Tates Creek HS in Lexington, KY with a very fast arm and good life on his fb. He didn't show much off speed pitches. We heard he has verbally committed to University of Kentucky. Pro guys will have definite interest.

Michael Howerton RHP Mid Atlantic Mets.

Howerton is a RHP with 86-88mph fb a solid 68mph cb, and 73mph change. Michael is a two way player who is considered a primary player first. The baseballclearinghouse.net Scouts really like him as a pitcher. A quick arm with more velo projected, he has clean mechanics and his arm works well. His cb works and has good shape, he stays low in the zone with very effective command. A 2010 player from Matoaca HS in Chesterfield, VA.

Gunnar Carroll-RHP- Mid Atlantic Pirates Scout Team

Gunnar showed very good command of a 85-88mph fb with nice sink, a 74mph cb with nice biting action. A 2010 RHP from Lousia Co. HS in Louisa, VA. he is very athletic and projects big velocity down the road. Two polished pitches now, with command, look for big interest from recruiters.

Marcus Howard -OF-Kentucky Baseball Club

Marcus is a 2011 OF from Western Hills HS in Frankfort KY. Marcus, a left handed hitting leadoff hitter who can move the ball around the field, excellent contact hitter with very good instincts on the basepaths. Covers real estate in centerfield and gets very good jumps. Definite high level college tools.

Ryan Kilmon- 1B- Mid Atlantic Pirates Scout Team

Ryan is a 2010 at Kellam HS in Virginia Beach VA. who showed off excellent power with two HR's. Lankly frame with athletic actions, Kilmon also showed good glove work on first base. More power to come from a very smooth quick stroke. Next level tools.

Kyle Majette-RHP-Richmond Braves

Kyle Majette is a 2012 RHP from Jamestown HS in Williamsburg, VA with very big upside.  Majette showed a lively 86mph fb, 71mph cb, and occasional 74mph change up.  Majette has a very good, lean tall, pitchers frame that should only get stronger.  Big projection.

Andrew Bryant- SS- Kentucky Baseball Club

Andrew is a 2011 from Tates Creek HS in Lexington , KY who can sing it. Andrew showed big hand strength and bat speed and drilled several balls very deep. Very good arm strength at SS with range to both sides. Good first step quickness. Next Level Tools.

Smith is a 2010 RF from Good Counsel HS in Maryland who get on base and moves up. He has big time arm strength in RF and can cover ground. Excellent runner who is always a threat on the base paths. Works the count and gets on. Mover.

Michael Douglas- OF- Mid Atlantic Mets Orange

Michael is a 2010 OF from Great Valley HS in Pennsylvania who can mash. Big strength from a medium size frame, he generates big bat speed and baseballclearinghouse.net Scouts saw him loose a ball deep over the LF fence in a game. Michale also have very good range in CF and displayed athletic ability when making a excellent diving catch against the Mid Atlantic Pirates.

Jack Maxey -RHP- Mid Atlantic Pirates Scout Team

Jack Maxey is a 2010 RHP from Bethel HS in Hampton, VA with very good cb.  Jack can spot his 72mph cb and had very good life and command on his 86mph fb.  Very good pitchers frame with clean delivery, he should continue to add velo to a cb that could get college hitters off stride, now.

John Bowman- RHP - Mid Atlantic Pirates Scout Team

John Bowman is a 2010-RHP from First Colonial HS in Virginia Beach, VA who has ML profile pitchers frame.  John flashed 88mph fb from a 6'4 frame with very good run, with 71mph cb with solid spin and command.  John can work both sides of plate with fb and has a frame that indicates 90's velo real soon.  Big projection.

Tyler Wells is a RHP from Lexington, KY with very deceptive drop down delivery.  Tyler flashes a 84mph fb with pinpoint command on a 68mph cb that he can throw for strikes at on point in the count.  Battles and keeps hitters off balance.  Lots of body deception and a low arm slot that has hitters searching for the ball.  We heard Western Kentucky University is very much on his mind as a college selection.

Chris is a 2011 SS from Brook Point HS with good range in the field and plenty of arm strength.  RH hitter with good bat speed and power on the way.  Very athletic and very good upside.

ABR-USSSA All American Games Regional Tryout -Lake Jackson, Texas

Cade Killingsworth (56) 14u participant showed big arm strength on the mound with 83mph fb velocity and 70mph velocity on cb, scouts noted good life on heater and good feel for change up.  Cade also worked out behind the dish posting 71mph arm strength anf 2.18 pop time.  A RH hitter with whippy bat action and good leverage in swing.  Showed very good power and advanced bat speed for age.   A tall lanky frame that will fill out, Cade is very athletic and is in the top talent level for his age group in the state of Texas.

AJ Angelone (53) 14u participant showed very well on the mound.  A RHP with 83mph fb velocity, 69cb velocity with good depth.  Advanced for age with big upside.  A loose arm and body that will add strength, AJ has very good projection on the mound.  Ext 3/4 slot and good lines in delivery , AJ is advanced for his peer group.  

Colby Turton (21) 15u participant, can rake.  Left hand hitter showed very good leverage and balance in bp and drove the ball all over the field.  Line drive swing plane with short stroke and balance throughout swing.  Colby is a catcher with 2.10 pop time and 69mph arm strength.  In modified game, he really showed off his bat.  Strong and developing.

Josh Schulman (28) 16u participant showed command and arm speed on the mound as a LHP.  Schulman has good stuff with compact , quick delivery and leverage at release.  Good arm arch and ave 3/4 slot.  80fb velocity with deception, 66cb with loose spin but very promising sharp bite on some cb's, and his best pitch, a 63mph change up with very good arm speed and command.  Maturity should add velo, already has solid command.  Upside.

Brett Ebers (25) 15u participant, showed good footwork around the bag on double plays from the SS side.  Soft hands, and good tranfers with good backside arm strength to first base.  Brett showed 75mph velocity at SS and 73mph radar tee.  A RH hitter with smooth stroke and very good bat speed for age.  Athletic in the box with very good hitting tools.  Likes the ball down in the zone and drives the gaps well.  Developing strength and should only get better.

AL - baseballclearinghouse.net Southeast Top Prospects Combine Showcases a Lot of Young Talent

Most walked away from the baseballclearinghouse.net Southeast Top Propsect Event talking about the amount of young talent present. Talent at all positions. An Alabama sophomore (Nathan Vincent) actually tied the record radar tee velocity at 98 mph. In fact 12 players broke the 90 mph radar tee barrier. The bat speed was very noticeable during BP with players lacing balls to the warning track and beyond the fences.

Batting wasn't the only tool present. Fifteen players had position velocities above 80 mph and two over 90 mph. Arm strength wasn't the only fielding tools present, as most infielders flashed soft gloves, quick feet and smooth transfers. Outfielders showed range with good angles and accurate throws.

Nine of the sixty one players broke the 7.00 sixty marks and ten more were below the 7.20 mark. The speed was present during the scrimmage games as players moved through extra bases on routine base hits.

Some of the players who caught our eye during the combine:

Kyle Crabtree (2011) MIF - Fort Payne HS - Fort Payne, Alabama

Kyle is a smooth middle infielder with soft hands and a nice glove. He has the range and arm strength to play SS at the next level. He ran a 6.73 sixty with a nice smooth gait. He was 81 mph across the infield with nice on line throws. He has fast twitch actions that are present in double play turns. At the plate he hit with some po in his bat and had an 89 mph radar tee reading.

 

Brandyn Crutcher (2011) OF - Lee HS - Huntsville, Alabama  

Brandyn is a speedy outfielder with nice arm strength. He plays the game hard with grit in his game. He ran a 6.84 sixty and ran bases very well during the scrimmage games. At the plate he centeredd balls well with a quick approach. He had an 86 mph radar tee and was 82 mph from the outfield.

 

 

Chase Fields (2010) IF - Hillcrest HS - Tuscaloosa, Alabama

 Chase is a smooth projectable infielder with nice athletic actions. He showed arm strength across the infield at 80mph with accurate, on line throws. He showed nice range and ran well with a 6.91 sixty that can get better with some tweaking of his running form. At the plate he showed a lot of pop in his bat with several balls hit out during the event. His radar tee reading was 92 mph.

 

Nathan Vincent (2011) IF - Russellville HS - Russellville, Alabama

Nathan tied the top radar tee velocity with a 98 mph reading and had multiple 96 mph readings during the session. He possesses a very quick approach and tremendous bat speed. He was equally as impressive in the field with range and soft hands at the third base position. He ran a 6.95 sixty and was 81 mph across the infield. He shows a mature body with now strength and will be one for us to watch very closely in the next two years.

Paul Baggett (2009) IF/RHP - Milton HS - Jay, Florida (Signed Tallahassee JC)

We had seen Paul before and he has matured and developed some since then. He shows nice arm strength accross the infield and pop in his bat. He likely will be a corner infielder at the college level and is a guy that can give you some quality innings on the mound. He has already signed with Tallahassee Junior College and should be a quality pick up for them. His fast ball hit 90 mph and sat comfortably in the 87-88 mph range with good life. From the plate he showed the ability to hit to all fields with some power, especially to his pull side.

 

Jordan Friend (2011) MIF - Lee HS - Huntsville, Alabama

Jordan is an athletic middle infielder with now skills and more growth ahead of him. He flashed smoothness, quickness in his hands and feet and above average arm strength in the field. He has range and some instincts for the ball. At the plate he centered balls well and showed the ability to hit to all fields. He has gap power and runs slightly above average and can be an early lineup type hitter. He is a nice follow for the next two years.

 

Peyton Fuller (2011) MIF/RHP - Fairhope HS - Fairhope, Alabama

Peyton was one of two Fairhope players that caught our eye (see Wes Kent below). Peyton is a nice, athletic middle infielder with nice actions, smooth hands and arm strength. At the plate he is a gap to gap type hitter that controls the bat head well and can occasionally be a threat to go yard. He is equally as impressive on the mound with a bulldog type mound presence and a fastball that we see getting better in the near future as he matures. He spots up pretty well and knows how to pitch.

 

 

Wes Kent (2011) MIF/OF - Fairhope HS - Fairhope, Alabama

Wes is the second of the two Fairhope players who impressed us in Montgomery. He is athletic and could easily make the transition to the outfield. He ran a 6.84 sixty that we see could likely be much better. He shows fast twitch actions that translate well in his transfers and throws. He has ample arm strength and range to play shortstop at the college level. At the plate he hit with some pop and centers the ball well.

 

Ben Moore (2011) OF/IF/C - Cullman HS - Cullman, Alabama

Ben is an impressive athlete with now body strength that shows serious conditioning habits and low body fat. He runs well and we suspect is much better than the 7.03 he ran at this combine. In the outfield he has range and makes good reads on balls with plus arm strength (90 mph). At the plate he is a hitting machine that centers balls and he creates backspin and carry. he has the ability to hit to all fields with some power and is a definite HR threat to pull side. He can play multiple positions and is equally as good at all of them, but we see him best as an outfielder who can hit early in the line up. 

 

Jacob Milliman (2011) RHP - Stanhope Elmore HS - Deatsville, Alabama

Jacob is a big, raw RHP with a high ceiling. He possesses a prototypical pro pitching body at 6-4/230 with raw strength. He throws with a long arm action from a H3/4 arm slot and creates some run on his fastball. His fastball sits in the mid 80's now and we see getting much better with some mechanical tweaking of his delivery. We see a lot of potential in this one and will be watching very closely during the summer. He could make a major jump into a national top prospect.

 

Drew Mobley (2011) RHP/1B - Madison Academy - Madison, Alabama

This is not the first of our events that Drew has been to and he impresses us each time. This time his most impressive feat was his 7.19 sixty time. For a 6-3/200 first baseman it wasn't bad! He has a nice strength and has toned his body since last year. His radar tee was second best at the event at 96 mph and he shows tremendous bat speed. If he can learn to sit back and wait on the ball he can become a major hitting prospect. Hit or not he has a future on the mound with an upper 80's fastball that he locates well. With two nice off-speed pitches in his arsenal he can be dominant at times.

 

Zack Willoughby (2011) OF - Boaz HS - Boaz, Alabama

Zack is a nice college prospect with now strength and a good frame. He runs well with a 6.94 sixty and has the arm strength to play right field at 84 mph. At the plate he hits with a lot of pop in his bat and he is a HRthreat. Zack is a nice follow with now skills that are sure to get better as he matures.

Highlights from Mid Atlantic Top Prospect Event in Hampton, VA June 7, 2009

Cameron Day (r) 2010 OF  Landtown HS had a very good day posting a 6.87 sixty time and 83mph velocity in the outfield.  Cameron has a very good bp session spraying the ball to all fields and showing college level power,  he also posted a 91mph radar tee reading.  Very athletic, Cameron continues to lower his sixty time and has legit centerfield speed and range.

Sam Scherzer, (9) RHP 2010-Powhatan HS,  Sam showed very good command with all his pitches in the game.  Striking out 5 out of 6 batter he faced and flashed 84mph fb and 71 mph cb.  This is the first time we have seen Sam and he should be on the radar screen for many school.  Easy delivery with solid frame to build on , look for a velocity jump soon.

Tyler Reed (R) 2010 OF Matoaca HS is very athletic and shows strength in all areas of game.  Tyler posted a 6.82 sixty time and showed very good 82mph arm strength from the outfield.  In bp Tyler showed good bat speed and more power to come from his lower half.  Barrell's the ball well now with very little help from his lower half.    He also took a trip to the mound and showed solid command of a 82mph fb, 67mph cb, and 73mph change.  Athletic and not afraid to go anywhere on the field.

Tyon Ore, (7) 2010 OF Maury HS showed of his arm strength several times form centerfield in the game.  He posted a very strong 84mph velocity reading on his workout throws from RF with very good carry and accuracy.  A RH hitter with strong hands and excellent bat speed, Tyon had a very good bp session and posted a 85mph reading on the radar tee.  Gets very good reads in CF and covers gap to gap.  Lead off type guy who can steal bags.  Big upside.

Gunnar Carroll (25) 2010 RHP Louisa HS, showed the best on the mound with 87mph fb and some nice sink.  His cb is tight and darting with 71mph velocity, He also uses a slider at 78mph with nice riding action to lh batters.  Gunnar adds a 4th pitch with a 78mph change up to compliment the slider.  He can work the ball to both sides of the plate and throw any pitch in any count.  Very loose , quick arm action, look for a velo jump into the 90's soon.

Raphael Sanchez (L) 2010 Robert E Lee HS, is a two play player who can swing it.  At the plate this RH hitter shows very good bat speed and power to all fields.  Short, compact swing with leverage at contact, Raphael can drive the ball to any part of the park.  Behind the plate he posted a 1.97 pop time and 73mph velocity.  He has soft hands and is a good receiver.  In the infield second base may be his spot but he did show enough range and arm strength to slide in some at SS.  Posted 76mph velocity in infield workout.  Athletic and quick, he posted a 6.93 sixty time.  Alot of things going well here.

Logan Hennessy (6) 2010 C Great Bridge HS, showed very good tools behind the dish.  Soft hands and good blocking ability with 2.08 pop time and 74mph velocity.  Look for his pop times to continue to drop.  Solid, athletic frame and look very durable for his position, built for a 56 game schedule.  At the plate he showed good balance and very nice pull power.  Good bat speed and went with the pitch in the game.  Posted a 84mph radar tee.  Developing with good upside.

Peter Culver (12) 2B Louis County HS , Good runner who can swing it. A second baseman with 78mph arm strength during workout.  Showed very soft hands and excellent footwork on double plays on the second base side.  Can swing the bat with 87 radar tee reading and good bat speed in bp session.  Good swings in game.  A 6.86 sixty speed, he will steal bags.  Athletic frame, he should only get stronger and quicker. 

Cameron Cecil (8) 2010 C Gloucester HS, showed very good tools behind the plate.  Posted 1.97 pop time with 76mph velocity,  good arm strength and transfer time show improve to lower pop time even more.  Catchers frame with good glove action.  At the plate he is a rh hitter with big time tools.  Cameron can square up on the ball in any part of the zone.  College level hand strength and bat speed with college level power.  A hitting catcher with good arm strength.  92mph radar tee reading.  Big upside and you will hear more from him, should be on every college radar screen.

Blake Leebrick (L) 2010 C Kellam HS, showed very well behind the dish with 2.06 pop time and 76mph velocity.  Frames well and does a very good job blocking.  Showed 83mph radar tee velocity and had a very solid bp session showing good bat speed and balance in his approach.  Posted a 7.54 sixty time. 

Joe Lynch (13) 2011 OF Robert E Lee HS, impact speed is his current tool with a 6.81 sixty time, that will only imnprove.  Joe showed 75mph velocity from the OF and good actions to the ball.  HIs bat is developing and will really add to his game as he matures.  He had 79mph radar tee velocity and showed a short stroke in bp.  Look for more power to come from better use of lower half.  Very athletic and should learn quickly.

Gary LeClair (1) 2011 INF/RHP The Steward School, one of the brightest spots of the event, posted a 6.69 sixty time,  with imapct type speed he has very good rang in the infield.  Showed 81mph arm strength in workout.  At the plate Gary showed excellent bat speed and balance with advanced hitting tools.  Good leverage and approaching ave college power.  85mph radar tee reading tell us more power to come.  On the mound, Gary was a real surprise showing 84mph fb and 72mph cb from a secondary position.  Athletic and developing.

Michael Rienerth (14) 2011 3B/RHP First Colonial HS, had a very good day on the mound and in the field.  Michael showed 83mph fb with good command, 68mph cb with good spin off the mound.  He has a very easy arm action and clean mechanics which should mean a velo jump soon.  In the infield workout he showed 78mph velocity and very good range to his glove side.  In the sixty time he posted a 7.08 time.  Athletic and lean with room to add strength, big upside.

Devon Mayfield (52), 16u participant, showed off skills at the plate and in the field.  Devon drove the ball to every part of the park during batting practice showing college level power and ability to barrel the ball.  Devon continued to show his hitting ability in the game.  At SS , Devon showed range to both sides and very good arm strength from the hole.  He has soft hands and has very quick transfers on double plays.


Evan East (83), 16u participant, showed excellent power at the plate and quick transfers behind the plate.  Evan drove the ball to the deepest parts of Golden Park in batting practice with college level power (currently), look for is strength to continue to develop.  College hitting tools with excellent bat speed, even his mis hits where hit hard.  Behind the dish Evan showed 1.79 pop time during workout with 75mph velocity.  He has very good backspin and carry on his throws with all throws dropped on the bag.  Devon continued to show quick transfers and accuracy during the game.

Wes Kent (43), 16u participant, is a triple threat who can hit, run and throw.  Wes posted a 6.93 sixty time and showed quickness on the base paths as well in the field.  He has speed that plays in the game.  At the plate he has advanced approach with very balanced swing with college level bat speed and hand strength.  Wes drives the ball to all fields and doesn't get fooled in game situations.  One of the best hitters at the event, look for his bat to be the biggest impact on his game.  In the field he has very soft hands and good footwork around the bag at second base.  Shows arm strength for ss with 80mph infield velocity during workout, Wes has fluid actions and good instincts. 

 
Carter White (84), 16u participant, showed arm strength and quickness behind the dish by posting a 1.88 pop time and 75mph velocity on his throws.  Carter is athletic with a frame that is going to add strength.  He receives the ball well and blocked well in the game.  At the plate Carter is a left hand hitter with strong hands, good bat speed, and big power projection.  Good approach in the box and will lift the ball.  Look for big hitting numbers in the future.  Athletic frame that will only get stronger.

Peyton Fuller (42), 16u participant, primary SS who also showed very good arm strength on the mound with 83mph fb, 71mph cb with very tight spin, and very good command of his 76 mph change up.  Peyton is a primary SS but we really liked his actions on the mound and see pitching also in his future.  At the plate he shows advanced approach with college level bat speed and power.  Short quick stroke with balance and easy line drive power.  Peyton is athletic and it shows at the plate.  Showed 84mph velocity across the infield during workout with excellent range to both sides.  Nice hands with quick transfers and good footwork on double plays.  A 7.49 sixty time is not a good read on his speed, we saw him post much better times last week at an Alabama event.

Joey Lewis (50), 16u participant, showed very good power with 92mph radar tee reading and very good power in bp and in the game.  Big upside with bat and solid actions in the infield with 78mph velocity across the infield.  Joey is very athletic and should continue to develop.

Tyler Crouch (37) , 16u participant, showed solid tools in all areas.  Decent speed with 7.34 sixty speed and ran the bases well in the game.  Behind the dish he showed 2.03 pop time and 72mph velocity.  Did a very good job blocking in the game.  Tyler appears to be a grinder who is always in the middle of the action.  Took charge behind the dish and handled pitchers well.

Ben Gann (48), 15u participant, can swing it and had a excellent bp session showing advanced bat speed and hand strength.  Ben used the whole field and drove the ball well with all balls squared up on the barrell.  Ben also showed very good arm strength across the infield from third base during the workout and in game situations. On the mound, Ben showed 78mhp fb with 61mph cb and 73mph change up.  Look for his 7.59 sixty time to improve.



Stewart Rich (70), 15u participant, primary RHP with long pitchers frame and athletic actions on the mound.  Stewart showed 82mph fb with some live, a 72mph cb that had very good shape and nice bite and a 72mph change up with very good arm speed that he can throw with command.  Stewart has a heavy fastball, and with natural strength development, should continue to add velocity due to his easy arm action and frame.

Dylan Williams (54), 14u participant, posted a 6.97 sixty time and showed skills at the plate.  Dylan has strong hands for his age and a very athletic frame that is starting to develop.  Primary OF, Dylan also threw off the mound and showed solid arm strength and age ave command.  Should continue to add velocity, but his bat is what draws attention, now.

Marcus McCorkle (22), 14u participant, showed a big bat.  Marcus showed advanced skills during batting practice and continued to show off in the games having two hard hits in the games and also smoking the ball hard in another gb out.  Marcus is loose in the box and has advanced bat speed.  Very solid in the field at 2b, Marcus should continue to lower his 7.28 sixty time, he is athletic and adding strength. 

Dalton Carriker (28), 14u participant showed advanced hitting skills with advanced power during batting practice.  Dalton is short and quick to the ball with excellent balance and hand strength.  Dalton participated and postponed an operation by Dr, James Andrews to repair mcl damage, to participate in event,  Even running a 7.62 sixty with a huge knee brace on his right knee.  A very tough competitor who showed very well at the plate in the game.

Chaz Thronton (53), 14u participant can fly.  Chaz posted one of the fastest sixty times we have ever had for a 14u player with a 6.61 sixty time.  Chaz showed his speed on the base paths and in centerfield in the game.  He has big time range in the outfield and is developing arm strength.  Look for his bat and arm strength to catch up to his quickness.

Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith (46), 14u participant, showed advanced athleticism all over the field.  Beginning with a 6.62 sixty speed and 88mph radar tee velocity to  76mph velocity on his fastball off the mound.  Ryan showed advanced hitting tools with very strong hands and excellent bat speed.  Ryan showed better action in the outfield, but also worked out in the infield.  Outstanding young prospect.
